The Department of Optometry and Visual Science was founded in the 1970s and hosts the only optometry course in Norway. Our course is competency-based and has a broad curriculum, providing students with workshop skills as well as the ability to perform optometry with privileges to use diagnostic drugs. Both teaching facilities and optometric instrumentation is up to date and students benefit from hands-on teaching in the clinics with internal and external patients and in school vision screening.

Research is of international standard, and includes visual ergonomics, neuromuscular organization of the oculomotor system, developmental vision, and age-related changes in vision. Research methods include electrophysiology, electron microscopy, experimental and clinical psychophysics, high resolution retinal imaging including adaptive optics and genetics.
