What will the European Academy do?

Advancing and promoting research

The European Academy will play a central role in advancing and promoting research and education into optometry and optics and related subjects.
The Academy’s annual Research and Academic Symposium will be an important event for optometrists, opticians, educationalists, vision scientists and researchers within Europe. The Symposium will help members to keep up to date with the latest research and new ideas and will provide a key channel to support members in their work to disseminate and share research, information and best practice.

The Academy will use the latest technology to enable members to develop and share their work more rapidly and effectively. The Academy will ultimately provide the foundation from which members can break through barriers to collaborative working and establish new relationships and partnerships that will augment existing practice and networks.

The Academy will provide a central forum through which peers can challenge established rhetoric, identify key issues for the field and forge effective tools to overcome challenges.

Influencing

The European Academy will use its influence to help the profession develop its capacity to conduct and disseminate research. Members will have access to the Academy’s Europe-wide network of optometrists and opticians, researchers and educationalists - who will come together through the Academy with a common dedication to the development of the science and practice of optometry and optics.

National and international funding bodies are increasingly concerned with the efficiency of the research market place. They are looking more carefully at the costs associated with commissioning research and moving toward positions that favour effective collaborative and multidisciplinary projects, capable of demonstrating innovative solutions combined with efficient use of research technology and personnel. The European Academy will provide networks and resources that will help its members in the development of projects and proposals that will meet these developing expectations.

Promoting Excellence - Awards and Grants

Developing the capacity for research in practical terms within a profession presents challenges. Instilling and promoting a research culture in interrelated professions within a wider field creates further demands. The Academy’s approach will aim to promote excellence and recognise achievements within the fields of optometry, optics and vision science.

Through the development of a portfolio of prizes, awards and grants the Academy will incentivise, support and acknowledge the work and success of its members and those within the field. This portfolio will represent the European Academy’s commitment to excellence and rigor in science and education and will offer a means of promoting the research, practice and standards of the professions concerned within Europe and globally.
